Age Groups and Skills

  • Swimmers and divers are divided into age categories based on the athlete’s age on May 29th.

Pre-Competitive (Ages 5-13)

  • Prerequisites: Swimmers must be able to swim 25 meters of freestyle and backstroke unassisted. This means making it completely across the pool without grabbing the lane ropes, stopping, or walking on the bottom.

  • Assessments: Swimmers who cannot make it across during the pre-season assessment will be encouraged to enroll in standard swimming lessons and try again next year. Please note: For the safety of all athletes, our team is designed for swimmers who already possess basic water skills. We are not equipped to provide beginner swimming lessons.

  • Skills Focus: Swimmers will practice all four strokes and may begin learning flip turns.
  • Meet Details: Each swimmer can compete in all offered individual events. Distances are 25 meters for Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly. Ribbons are awarded to all finishers!

    Competitive

  • Prerequisites: Swimmers should already know Freestyle, Backstroke, and Breaststroke. They must be able to swim 50 meters of Freestyle and Backstroke without stopping, touching the lane lines, or walking on the bottom.
  • Skills Focus: Swimmers will refine their strokes, learn the Butterfly stroke as the season progresses, and practice flip turns.
  • Meet Details: Swimmers can compete in 3 individual events and 2 relays (for tri-meets, this is adjusted to 2 individual events and 2 relays). Ribbons are awarded for 1st through 8th place.
  • Relay Policy: If your child is an alternate for a relay team, it counts as one of their two relay events. It is required that your child stays for the entire meet if assigned as an active participant or alternate on a relay team.
  • Distances: * Freestyle, Backstroke, Breaststroke, and Butterfly: 50 meters (18&U swim 100 meters, excluding Fly).
    • Individual Medley (IM): 200 meters.

    Relays: 50 meters per person.

    Dive

  • Prerequisites: Divers must be able to safely go off the front of the diving board (not the sides) and swim to the ladder without assistance.
  • Skills Focus: Divers will learn proper board approaches and may begin learning to flip off the board.
  • Meet Criteria: Dive requirements scale with age and experience. Divers must meet the following criteria to be entered as a competitor in any meet:
    • 7U: Perform 2 dives with a proper approach (jumps allowed).
    • 9U: Perform 3 different dives with a proper approach (one jump allowed).
