Swim Meet Basics

When Do Swim Meets Happen? Swim meets are held on Saturday mornings. We have four swim meets throughout the season.

  • Arrival: Swimmers need to arrive by 7:45 AM for warm-ups.
  • Timeline: Meets begin at 8:00 AM and usually end around 10:00 AM.

What is a Swim Meet? A swim meet is an outdoor competition between two or more teams. The goal is simple: complete your assigned swimming event as fast as you can (legally)!

The Order of Events To help swimmers progress, we introduce strokes gradually throughout the season:

  • First Meet: Freestyle & Backstroke
  • Second Meet: Breaststroke added
  • Third & Fourth Meets: Butterfly added

Swim Meet Glossary (Terms to Know!)

  • Event: A specific race during the competition broken down by distance, stroke, age, gender, and relay type. Swimmers typically compete in 1–4 events per meet. All events are numbered and go in a standard order.
  • Heat: A single round or "wave" of an event. The number of heats depends on how many lanes are available and how many swimmers are signed up for that specific event.
  • Lane Number: The specific lane in the pool assigned to a swimmer for their heat.
  • Short Course (SC) Pool: A pool configured with a 25-meter-long race course (like ours!).
  • Watch Time: The official race time recorded by a lane timer manually starting and stopping a stopwatch.
